Semiconductor equipment maker Genesem will supply 11.88 billion won worth of backend equipment to Korean outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) company Hana Micron.

Genesem said in a regulatory filing on Sept. 7 that it signed an 11.88 billion won contract with Hana Micron to supply semiconductor backend equipment. The contract is equivalent to 20.94% of Genesem’s revenue of 56.76 billion won last year.

The equipment includes saw singulation systems, test handlers and laser marking equipment. Saw singulation systems are expected to account for the largest share of the order.

Saw singulation systems are used in semiconductor packaging to separate devices formed on a wafer into individual semiconductor chips, or dies. The equipment uses a circular diamond blade rotating at high speed to cut through the wafer.

Test handlers are automated systems that transfer packaged semiconductor chips to test equipment and sort them according to whether they pass or fail inspection. They are docked with automated test equipment (ATE) used to inspect the electrical characteristics of chips.

Laser marking equipment engraves identifiable manufacturing information on the surface of semiconductor packages after assembly and packaging. It is also used to mark and sort defective products detected during printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing.

The contract runs through July 1 next year. Genesem will receive 30% of the contract value upfront after signing, followed by 40% after equipment delivery and the remaining 30% after equipment acceptance. “The equipment is scheduled to be delivered next year,” a Genesem official said. “The destination is Hana Micron’s plant in Vietnam.”

Hana Micron is an OSAT company engaged in semiconductor packaging, testing and module businesses. Its Bac Giang plant in Vietnam handles packaging and module production for memory semiconductors including DRAM and solid-state drives (SSDs). Its main customer is SK hynix.

Hana Micron is expanding production capacity at its Vietnam plant to meet outsourcing demand from memory customers including SK hynix. Without purchasing additional land, the Bac Giang plant is installing equipment and infrastructure in unused space within the existing facility. Its turnkey backend processing capacity will increase from 72 million units a month in June this year to more than 100 million units a month by December.
