A union representing Micron employees in Taoyuan, Taiwan, has secured its members' backing for a strike over the company's bonus scheme, Reuters reports. Taiwan is a key production base for Micron's DRAM and HBM chips, and a strike could add to supply concerns in an already tight memory market.
According to the union, 1,994 members, or 99% of those who voted, backed a strike. The timing and other details of any action are still under discussion. Mediation between Micron and the Taoyuan union ended without agreement in September.
The dispute centres on the union's demand for a permanent profit-sharing mechanism. In September, Micron announced rewards for more than 60,000 employees worldwide after what it called an "extraordinary year", including a cash bonus of TWD 1 million, about USD 31,400, for employees in Taiwan, according to Reuters. The union says the package does not meet its demand, and has criticised Micron for announcing it while mediation was still ongoing.
Micron employs around 15,000 people in Taiwan, where separate unions represent workers at its operations in Taoyuan and Taichung. Together, the two unions represent more than 80% of the company's Taiwanese workforce. Negotiations with the Taichung union are still ongoing.
The conflict comes a week after Micron reported record revenue of USD 54.2 billion for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year. In his prepared remarks for the earnings call, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the company had increased fiscal 2026 incentive compensation for all employees worldwide in recognition of their efforts.
