LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo is rapidly expanding alliances with global artificial intelligence (AI) companies. After visiting Nvidia's US headquarters in August and signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on strategic business cooperation with CEO Jensen Huang, Koo has now joined forces with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at the software company's headquarters.
LG is accelerating its push into the AI infrastructure market by leveraging its strengths in manufacturing, robotics, automotive components, cooling, batteries and IT infrastructure solutions.
Koo and Nadella met at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on Sept. 21 and formed a strategic partnership. It was the first meeting between Koo and Nadella.
LG plans to supply cooling, power and IT infrastructure solutions as Microsoft expands its global data center footprint. In the near term, the company plans to start with high-capacity cooling solutions for AI data centers at key strategic locations.
The two companies will expand their cooperation over the medium to long term to prefabricated data centers. Prefabricated data centers can shorten construction times by manufacturing major equipment in advance and assembling it on-site.
They will also expand cooperation in physical AI and AI transformation (AX). LG will apply cloud infrastructure to the development and training of AI models for manufacturing, logistics and mobility. The two companies will also use their infrastructure and platforms for a data flywheel that collects data from manufacturing sites and feeds it back into model training.
For AX, LG will adopt Microsoft's AI and cloud platforms. The company will deploy Microsoft 365 E7: Frontier Suite, including Copilot, across its office workforce. It will design an AI-based work system taking security, cost and operating environments into account. The move is seen as an effort to accelerate LG Group's transformation into an AI company.
LG's AI infrastructure cooperation with Nvidia, following an MOU signed in August, is also taking shape. LG Electronics and LG Energy Solution said they were selected as launch partners for Nvidia's newly introduced DSX Ready AI factory infrastructure ecosystem.
DSX Ready is a program that qualifies products and solutions meeting the requirements for Nvidia's DSX AI Factory. Nvidia's initial lineup includes six partner products — three battery energy storage systems (BESS) and three coolant distribution units (CDUs).
Nvidia selected data center cooling and ESS companies as partners as infrastructure becomes increasingly important for AI data centers. Stable power supply and data center operating capabilities have become key competitive factors beyond securing AI computing performance.
LG Energy Solution met the DSX Ready requirements for AC energy storage solutions with its LFP battery-based JF2 AC Link. Its modular design allows capacity to be expanded according to data center size and power demand.
The system also incorporates power conversion system (PCS) control technology to respond to rapid fluctuations in AI data center power consumption. It features AI Load Smoothing, which charges and discharges batteries to ease loads when server power consumption changes sharply. It also incorporates Voltage Ride-Through to maintain power supply during sudden grid voltage fluctuations and Grid-Forming technology that independently establishes voltage and frequency.
LG Energy Solution locally produces ESS products in North America from battery cells to packs and links. It operates five ESS production bases and plans to secure more than 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of production capacity by the end of this year. It also uses its US ESS system integration (SI) unit Vertech to provide services ranging from battery design to operations and maintenance.
Koo signed an MOU with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in August covering strategic business cooperation in robotics, AI factories and mobility. Before that, he visited the US in April and met Palantir CEO Alex Karp, whose company has a strategic alliance with LG CNS, as well as co-founders of physical AI startup Skild AI.
