SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung said the company will strengthen its competitiveness in next-generation memory through production hubs now under construction.
According to SK hynix on Sept. 21, Kwak said at the 2026 Global Forum held Sept. 18 at the Marriott Hotel in Santa Clara, California, that demand for AI memory will remain high as the AI industry continues to grow. "We will maintain our technological edge and market dominance through new global production hubs and R&D foundations," he said. SK hynix is expanding production bases including the Yongin Cluster in Gyeonggi Province and the Indiana Fab in the US. The company has also established a new Global AI R&D Center in the US.
"Without memory, the artificial intelligence (AI) industry cannot exist," Kwak said. "Just as we set a new milestone with high bandwidth memory (HBM), we will open up new possibilities for AI through the next-generation memory we are preparing."
The Global Forum is an annual SK hynix event that began in 2012 to introduce the company's technology vision and growth direction to global talent. This year's theme was "Share the Vision, Shape the Future, Together." The company shared its memory technology capabilities and development roadmap. Executives attending included Kwak and Ahn Hyun, president and chief development officer (CDO).
A panel discussion that followed focused on changes in the memory industry driven by advances in AI. UC Irvine professor Jeon Sang-woo moderated the discussion. SK hynix participants included executive vice president Kim Hyung-soo, head of DRAM Design; executive vice president Lee Jae-won, head of AI Interface; executive vice president Lee Kang-wook, head of Package Development; and executive vice president Kim Ho-shik, head of Memory Systems Research. The panelists said AI in the past had focused on improving performance, while integrated systems will become increasingly important. They also said the ability of experts from different fields to work together to solve problems will become more critical.
SK hynix also cited its "One-Team" corporate culture as a factor behind its competitiveness in the AI memory market. "SK hynix has been able to lead the AI memory market because of its flexible and horizontal organizational culture," said Jin Bo-gun, executive vice president and head of Corporate Culture at SK hynix. "At its core are a One-Team culture that brings together individual capabilities to create greater synergy and a culture of continuous challenge."
SK hynix executives also held technology seminars, discussing future development directions across four areas: design, process and device, advanced packaging, and systems. An exhibition space showcased the company's product portfolio and technologies, including HBM, next-generation memory solutions and research papers by SK hynix scholarship recipients.
"It was an opportunity to directly share our vision and strategy with experts leading the AI industry and global talent who will shape future technologies," an SK hynix official said. "We will continue to actively engage with experts in the semiconductor and AI fields."
