SK hynix will invest a total of 54.3 trillion won to build new semiconductor fabrication plants in Yongin and Cheongju.

The company said on Aug. 7 that its board approved investments of 35.2 trillion won for Y2, the second fab at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, and 19.1 trillion won for M17, a new fab in Cheongju.

In June, SK hynix unveiled its long-term investment strategy, committing 600 trillion won to the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and 100 trillion won to expanding its production base in Cheongju.

Y2 will be the second of four fabs that SK hynix plans to build at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster. The facility will have a total floor area of 341,000 pyeong and will manufacture high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and next-generation DRAM products.

Construction of Y2 is scheduled to begin in July 2027, with the first cleanroom set to open in June 2029. Investments will be carried out in phases through October 2031. Y1, which is currently under construction, is targeting the opening of its first cleanroom in February 2027.

SK hynix said it has accelerated the completion schedule for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster by 12 years, bringing forward the target date from 2045 to 2033. The Y2 project represents the second phase of the cluster's development. Investments related to the fab will continue through October 2031.

The Y2 investment includes construction costs for a support building with employee work and welfare facilities, an integrated R&D center that combines product testing, analysis and development functions, as well as water treatment facilities, utility tunnels, substations and warehouses.

At the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, which is being developed on a site of about 1.26 million pyeong in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, first-phase power and water infrastructure required for Y2 operations is currently under construction. The project has reached a completion rate of 99%. SK hynix said it will proceed with fab construction alongside infrastructure development to keep the project on schedule.

M17 will serve as a NAND production base. SK hynix said demand for NAND products, particularly enterprise SSDs, is increasing as AI services become more widespread. Demand is also rising for storage used in KV caches, which store previously generated key and value vectors during AI inference to reduce repetitive computation. The company expects NAND applications to expand further as agentic AI and physical AI become more prevalent.

SK hynix selected Cheongju as the location for the new NAND fab because existing production facilities and infrastructure can be utilized, enabling faster construction.

The Cheongju campus currently operates M11, M12 and M15 NAND production fabs. SK hynix said the new facility will improve manufacturing efficiency through integration with existing operations. The site also already has substantial infrastructure, including land, power and water resources.

M17 will have a total floor area of 206,000 pyeong. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2027, with the first cleanroom expected to open in December 2028. Investments will continue through April 2031 and will be executed in phases according to the project schedule.

SK hynix said it plans to secure production infrastructure in advance based on medium- and long-term demand discussions with customers, while actual capacity expansion will be carried out in line with customer demand.

"This investment is intended to ensure that we do not miss opportunities as the market continues to grow," an SK hynix official said. "By proactively securing production infrastructure, we aim to establish ourselves as a key AI infrastructure partner contributing to the stability of the global AI semiconductor supply chain."
