Intel plans to launch Razor Lake AX, a new system-on-chip (SoC) designed for robotics applications, in 2028.

Cho Min-sung, vice president at Intel, said at the "Semiconductors Powering Humanoids" conference held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, on Oct. 16 that the company's current Panther Lake-based robotics development tools theoretically deliver 180 trillion operations per second (TOPS). "We plan to introduce the next-generation Nova Lake early next year, followed by Razor Lake AX in 2028, targeting performance of around 700 TOPS," he said.

A performance level of 700 TOPS represents 700 trillion operations per second. Nvidia's Jetson AGX Orin, an SoC designed for robotics, delivers approximately 275 TOPS.

Humanoid robots operate using on-device AI, processing AI computations in real time within the robots themselves. This enables perception, decision-making and action to occur without delays. High computing performance in edge processors is a key factor determining humanoid robot capabilities.

"Domestic customers are planning to begin mass production of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) next year, while most are targeting 2028 for humanoids," Cho said. This also explains the planned 2028 launch of Razor Lake AX.

Intel aims to support efficient and rapid deployment of complete robotic systems through its Intel Core Ultra Series 3 robotics computing platform. The platform can be used across multiple applications, including industrial robotic arms, AMRs and humanoids.

Core Ultra Series 3 integrates a central processing unit (CPU), neural processing unit (NPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU). Intel also provides Robinson Bay, an integrated hardware and software development platform that enables companies to build and deploy robotic systems directly.

Intel has also prepared software tools for optimization. These include OpenVINO, which optimizes AI model inference for edge environments with limited computing resources; Physical AI Studio, Intel's comprehensive robotics AI development tool; and Robotics AI Suite, which supports real-time robot control and precise, safe operation.
