Nvidia has established an artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure financing platform backed by leading global financial institutions and $500 billion in third-party capital, as demand for AI infrastructure continues to accelerate.

The company said on Aug. 11 that it had entered into strategic partnerships with Apollo Global Management, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to launch the initiative.

The platform is designed to help Nvidia customers secure financing for AI infrastructure projects. Participating financial institutions will provide debt financing for infrastructure investments, allowing customers to purchase graphics processing units (GPUs) and other AI computing equipment.

Chief executive officer Jensen Huang said Nvidia's products have been broadly adopted across the AI industry and can be deployed flexibly for a wide range of AI models and workloads. He said many companies require additional computing capacity but lack access to sufficient capital, making partnerships with leading investment firms essential.

Nvidia's GPUs have become a core component of AI infrastructure because of their broad applicability and extensive software ecosystem. However, constrained manufacturing capacity across the supply chain has struggled to keep pace with demand, contributing to higher prices.

Some industry observers have raised concerns that the financing structure could encourage circular financing. While Nvidia is not lending directly to customers, critics argue that facilitating financing could stimulate demand for its own products. They warn that if returns on AI infrastructure investments fall short of expectations, risks could spread to both lenders and borrowing companies, potentially affecting broader financial markets.

The structure of the platform has also drawn scrutiny. Huang told CNBC that if a project encounters difficulties, another operator could assume control of the infrastructure, adding that Nvidia offers an option to guarantee 25% of each loan while taking the AI infrastructure itself as collateral.

CNBC compared the arrangement with the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis in the early 2000s. During that period, mortgage-backed securities were widely sold to investors before rising defaults ultimately triggered a global financial crisis, the report noted.

Huang dismissed concerns about circular financing in an interview with Axios, saying the platform is intended to help customers make use of otherwise inaccessible computing resources.
