  • Kolon Life Science CEO Lee Han-kook

Gimcheon plant to add 5,400 tons of annual PPO capacity

Kolon Life Science said September 30 it will expand the annual production capacity of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) at its Gimcheon plant in North Gyeongsang Province to 5,400 metric tons. The company will install new reactors to convert raw materials into PPO and reinforce existing equipment. The expanded facilities are scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2027.

PPO is a low-dielectric plastic material used in artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors and sixth-generation (6G) communications equipment. It has low signal loss and insulating properties that help electricity flow only along designated paths. The material is suitable for high-temperature, high-speed signal transmission.

PPO is a key raw material for modified polyphenylene oxide (mPPO). In June last year, Kolon Life Science transferred technologies and rights related to mPPO to Kolon Industries for 17 billion won. It has continued to supply PPO to Kolon Industries since then.

mPPO offers insulating performance three to five times higher than conventional insulating materials such as epoxy resin. It is used in copper-clad laminates (CCLs), a key material for printed circuit boards (PCBs).

The expansion of PPO production capacity is expected to secure a stable supply of materials for Kolon Group’s electronic-materials business. It will also enable the company to respond to growth in the high-performance electronics market.

“This investment will serve as an opportunity to further expand our production base for electronic-materials raw materials,” said Lee Han-kook, CEO of Kolon Life Science. “Through the expansion, we will secure production flexibility and supply stability to respond to a range of customer demand and strengthen our competitiveness in electronic materials based on differentiated synthesis technology.”
