Winpac, an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) company, returned to operating profit in the second quarter, the company said Aug. 13.

Winpac posted 30.2 billion won in sales and 800 million won in operating profit in the second quarter. Sales rose about 65% from a year earlier, while operating profit swung to a profit. The company had remained in the red for 13 consecutive quarters, from the first quarter of 2023 through the first quarter of this year.

The improvement in second-quarter results was driven primarily by higher sales from new customers and increased orders from existing customers. Gains from production and equipment operating efficiencies, as well as improvements to its business structure, also contributed. Winpac said it will continue to improve the efficiency of its production lines and equipment operations while securing orders focused on profitability and improving its business portfolio.

The company plans to strengthen the competitiveness of its existing semiconductor packaging business and higher-value testing business. It is building a business structure that can translate sales growth into improved profitability.

Winpac expects its performance improvement to continue in the second half. It will continue to increase volumes from existing customers, while sales from new testing businesses will be reflected sequentially. Profitability is expected to improve gradually as sales grow and operating efficiency increases.

Winpac plans to expand its non-memory wafer testing business, a new growth engine, and steadily increase the share of testing in its business. The company will use its in-house capabilities in developing test programs, accumulated through its existing semiconductor back-end processing business, to secure new customers and products.

Going forward, Winpac plans to strengthen its competitiveness as an integrated service provider capable of offering turnkey services spanning wafer testing, packaging, and final testing.

Winpac will expand its customer base, focusing on semiconductor design companies, or fabless firms, in China and other Chinese-speaking markets. By increasing orders from existing customers and securing new customers, the company aims to reduce its dependence on individual customers and products and establish a more stable revenue structure.

“Returning to profit in the second quarter shows that the results of sales growth, operating efficiency improvements, and business-structure improvements are beginning to be reflected in our financial performance,” Winpac said. “We will do our best to further improve our management performance and enhance corporate and shareholder value.”
