EcoPro BM is set to negotiate with China’s largest battery maker CATL this month over a cathode-material supply deal. The initial supply volume is expected to be discussed at about 20,000 tons a year. Based on 1,500 tons of cathode material per gigawatt-hour (GWh), that would correspond to about 13 GWh, enough for batteries used in about 200,000 conventional passenger electric vehicles. For high-nickel nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) products, a long-term contract of more than three years would be valued at a substantial scale, according to industry estimates.

EcoPro BM and CATL are discussing a potential cathode-material supply partnership, industry sources said Friday. Price and supply volumes are among the main topics under discussion. The companies have yet to reach the stage of finalizing specific contract terms, according to the sources. The talks are expected to accelerate as regulations requiring greater regional sourcing of batteries and cathode materials in Europe become more stringent.

If negotiations are successful, EcoPro BM could begin supplying cathode materials to CATL from 2028. The deal would mark the first time a South Korean cathode-material company supplies CATL, allowing EcoPro BM to expand its customer base beyond Samsung SDI and SK On to China’s top battery maker.

“Securing CATL as a customer has significant meaning in itself given that it is the world’s largest battery maker,” a person familiar with EcoPro BM said. “EcoPro BM is also placing priority on securing an initial supply volume and entering CATL’s supply chain.”

Cathode materials account for about 40% of battery costs, making increased local sourcing a requirement for companies producing batteries in Europe. The European Union is encouraging regional production of batteries and key materials through measures including the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) and the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). Rules of origin for batteries under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) between the EU and the U.K. will also tighten from January 2027.

Cathode-material production capacity in Europe remains limited. While Umicore and BASF have about 50,000 tons of capacity in Europe, that is insufficient to meet demand. Chinese cathode-material companies including Ningbo Ronbay and Easpring have also established production bases in Europe, but their operations have yet to reach full-scale production due to local plant approvals and environmental regulations.

EcoPro BM has secured a cathode-material production base close to CATL’s Hungary plant, with the two facilities located about 3 kilometers apart. CATL’s Debrecen plant is its second European production base after its facility in Thuringia, Germany. It currently produces battery modules, while its battery-cell plant is undergoing the permitting process required to begin operations. Initial cell production capacity is planned at 40 GWh, with a potential expansion to 100 GWh, supplying batteries to automakers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

EcoPro BM’s Debrecen plant began operating its first production line in June and will bring a second line online at the end of this month. The third line will be modified by the first half of next year to produce both nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) and NCM cathode materials.

EcoPro BM is also expanding production capacity at the Debrecen plant, taking into account increased orders from Samsung SDI and new projects. Each production line currently has an annual capacity of 18,000 tons. The company plans to raise that to 20,000 tons, increasing total capacity across three lines from 54,000 tons to 60,000 tons a year. Funding for the equipment modifications will come from a paid-in capital increase.

The success of EcoPro BM’s bid to supply cathode materials to CATL will depend heavily on price competitiveness. EcoPro BM plans to secure nickel feedstock directly from Indonesia to lower the production cost of ternary cathode materials. Since 2024, the company has pursued a “price disruption for ternary materials” strategy, focusing on strengthening competitiveness at the raw-material stage.

More than half of the total value added in the cathode-material supply chain is generated at the mining and refining stages. EcoPro BM is expanding investment in nickel refining in Indonesia to secure cost and order competitiveness. A key investment is the BNSI nickel refinery in Indonesia, which is scheduled to begin operations in the second quarter of next year with an annual capacity to produce 90,000 tons of mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP). EcoPro BM plans to use nickel feedstock secured from BNSI in cathode-material production at its Hungary plant to improve cost competitiveness.
