Semiconductor Industry Update Webinar – Oct 6, 2026

The 2026 chip market is currently growing at its strongest rate ever in the industry’s 79-year history, up more than 100 percent in the first half of the year. June also marked 34 consecutive months of growth, the industry’s second-longest uninterrupted expansion, just one month short of the 35-month upturn from June 2002 to May 2005. On current trends, the market will smash that record in August and effortlessly break through the US$1 trillion barrier in September. Little wonder the chip world is punch-drunk on euphoria, citing “strong sales underscoring the strength of global chip demand and the vital role semiconductors play in powering the next generation of technology innovation and economic competitiveness.”

The market’s momentum is indisputable … but what could possibly go wrong? Two critical factors make these growth numbers potentially insecure. First, growth is being driven by ASPs, up 79.8 percent, rather than units, which are up only 12.1 percent. Second, the growth is not broadly based but is being driven by a single end-market application: the white-hot AI hyperscaler boom and its deep-pocketed customers. This concentration is starting to raise doubts about the boom’s ongoing sustainability.

• Is the current boom a transformational paradigm shift?

• Will the AI-driven boom keep the market afloat through 2027 and beyond?

• What if the AI investment boom slows—or, worse still, crashes and burns?

• Can traditional markets pick up the likely wafer fab and advanced packaging overcapacity capacity?

History tells us that it is always impossible to know in advance exactly where we are on the path in any boom-bust cycle. But there are signs to look out for that can help better prepare.
