第四季度,公司计划开始量产使用Falcon的附加卡(AIC)和JBOM(即Just a Bunch of Memory)系统,这些系统通过CXL交换机连接。

Primemas aims to generate $200 million in revenue by the end of next year with a Compute Express Link (CXL) memory solution that can support more than 100 terabytes (TB) of memory on a single server.

Primemas Chief Executive Officer Park Il outlined the company’s pooled-memory strategy using CXL at a press briefing at its Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, office on Aug. 20. The company is a fabless chipmaker that designs CXL controllers and modules.

CXL is a high-speed interface that enables fast and efficient data exchange between memory and processors such as central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs). Pooled memory combines multiple memory resources into a shared pool and allocates them according to GPU or CPU demand, reducing the amount of memory that individual processors need while improving utilization.

Primemas designs Falcon, a CXL controller system-on-chip (SoC). In the fourth quarter, the company plans to begin mass production of add-in cards (AICs) using Falcon and JBOM, or Just a Bunch of Memory, systems that connect the cards through CXL switches. Its competitors include Marvell and Astera Labs.

CXL requires close cooperation with memory suppliers to maximize memory performance. Primemas has partnerships with Micron and others to jointly develop hardware and software optimized for JBOM and related products. Its customers include the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Abaco Systems and financial companies. Primemas plans to install JBOM in an Abaco Systems rack with Micron in September.

The AIC is a PCIe interface card that can accommodate two Falcon chips and as many as 16 registered dual in-line memory modules (RDIMMs) for servers. Assuming 256 gigabytes (GB) per DRAM module, a single card can provide 4 TB of memory. It supports CXL standards from 2.0 through 3.2 and DDR5 DRAM. Primemas also plans to design an AIC supporting DDR4 by the first half of next year in response to customers seeking to reuse DDR4 memory.

Server CPUs can support only about 2 TB of DRAM per chipset because of physical limitations. Multiple CPUs are needed to secure more than 2 TB of memory, increasing the cost of building a server. JBOM connects dozens of AICs through CXL switches, reducing the CPU-related cost burden. In theory, a single JBOM can provide more than 100 TB of memory. “Beyond simply increasing memory capacity, data center performance can improve by as much as 40 times,” Park said.

JBOM can be used not only in artificial intelligence (AI) servers but also in financial data centers that need to analyze and process large databases within short periods. A card payment, for example, takes about 0.5 seconds from card recognition to transaction approval. During that time, the card company analyzes information including the user’s transaction history to determine whether the transaction is fraudulent before approving it. If it is deemed suspicious, the transaction may be declined and the card temporarily suspended. “Malfunctions can undermine trust in the card company,” Park said. “JBOM can analyze more data within the same amount of time, reducing the likelihood of errors.”

Primemas expects to generate more than $200 million in revenue over roughly five quarters starting in the fourth quarter, when mass production begins. South Korean fabless startup FuriosaAI posted revenue of about 5.7 billion won last year, while Rebellions recorded about 32 billion won. “Every data center is a potential customer for us,” Park said. “The market we are targeting is relatively larger than those targeted by Korean fabless startups, so our revenue will inevitably be higher.”
