Applied Materials and Kioxia will collaborate on the development of structures and materials for next-generation memory.

Applied Materials announced on Sept. 29 local time that Kioxia will join the EPIC (Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization) Center as an innovation partner. The EPIC Center is a joint research and development (R&D) facility for semiconductor equipment and process innovation and commercialization being established in Silicon Valley, California. It aims to significantly shorten the time required to commercialize semiconductor technologies, from the research stage through mass production.

Kioxia will gain rapid access to Applied Materials’ latest R&D equipment and technologies through the collaborative environment at the EPIC Center. Applied Materials will also gain broader insight into multiple processes through joint innovation programs and use the findings to guide its R&D investment.

The two companies will collaborate on research aimed at increasing memory storage capacity and operating speeds for the artificial intelligence (AI) era. Their R&D efforts will focus on four key areas.

First, they will develop advanced memory cells and structures for high-capacity memory used in AI applications. Second, they will work on multichip stacking technologies for next-generation memory. The other areas are advanced packaging technologies to improve interconnect performance and integration density when multiple memory chips are stacked in complex configurations, and materials engineering for next-generation memory capable of large-scale production.

More than 10 companies and organizations, including Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Micron Technology, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), and Broadcom, are participating in the EPIC Center. The facility is nearing the final stage of preparations for operation. R&D equipment is being moved into its cleanrooms, and the center’s opening ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 12. Investment totaling $5 billion is expected to be made gradually in the future.

Gary Dickerson, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Applied Materials, said, “We are bringing together Kioxia’s deep memory technology expertise and Applied Materials’ materials engineering innovation at the EPIC Center.” He added, “We are working on an outstanding collaboration to redefine next-generation memory.”

Hiroo Ota, president and CEO of Kioxia, said, “Our collaboration with Applied Materials reflects our shared commitment to driving memory innovation.”
