CK Solution, a specialist in battery dry rooms, has successfully expanded into new businesses including semiconductors and data centers. With several large projects secured, the company is nearing its target of 500 billion to 600 billion won in cumulative orders this year. It also began its first business with SK hynix through a project for the chipmaker's advanced packaging plant in Indiana, United States. The contract alone is worth 147.7 billion won, equivalent to about 30% of its annual target.
According to industry sources on Oct. 2, the value of new and expanded contracts for major projects disclosed by CK Solution this year totaled about 347.8 billion won. That is more than three times the 101.3 billion won in orders disclosed last year. The sharp increase was driven by SK hynix. CK Solution won a construction project related to SK hynix's Indiana fab in September. The contract is worth 147.7 billion won, accounting for more than 40% of the contracts disclosed by the company this year. It is equivalent to about half of last year's annual revenue of 291 billion won.
An official at CK Solution said, "This is our first transaction with SK hynix," adding, "Including undisclosed contracts, we expect cumulative orders this year to reach between 500 billion won and 600 billion won, about twice last year's roughly 260 billion won."
SK hynix began construction of its fab in West Lafayette, Indiana, in August. CK Solution is responsible for building the manufacturing infrastructure needed before semiconductor production equipment is installed at the Indiana fab. The contract runs through October 2028.
The Indiana fab is SK hynix's first artificial intelligence (AI) memory production base in the United States. The approximately 470,000-square-meter site will house a high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production line and an advanced packaging research and development (R&D) testbed. SK hynix plans to supply next-generation HBM, packaged and tested locally, to US customers beginning in the second half of 2029.
CK Solution has grown primarily through its battery dry-room business. A dry room is a facility that maintains an ultra-low-humidity environment, with a dew point of minus 40 degrees Celsius or lower, for handling moisture-sensitive lithium materials. CK Solution also holds exclusive domestic distribution rights for dehumidifying rotors made by Japan's Nichias.
The company has built manufacturing infrastructure at battery plants in South Korea and overseas for the country's three major battery makers — LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On. This year, it won a 35.4 billion-won contract at LG Energy Solution's Michigan plant in the US and a 29.3 billion-won contract at Samsung SDI's plant in Hungary. It also added a 72.4 billion-won order from StarPlus Energy, the US joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis.
CK Solution has recently expanded its business beyond batteries into semiconductors, data centers, and defense. Its customer base has also diversified as large projects in semiconductors and data centers have followed one another this year.
In semiconductors, CK Solution won a contract worth about 30.9 billion won in July for Phase 1 finishing work at Samsung Electronics' P5 facility in Pyeongtaek. In February, it secured a 12.3 billion-won contract to expand the Songdo plant of Amkor Technology Korea, a semiconductor backend-services company. The company plans to expand its participation in subsequent Samsung Electronics projects, including P5 Phases 2 through 4, starting with P5 Phase 1. It also plans to target new production facilities, including the Yongin semiconductor cluster.
In data centers, CK Solution has secured LG Uplus and Hanwha Systems as customers. On Oct. 1, CK Solution disclosed a 23 billion-won contract for the construction of LG Uplus's Paju data center. The data center project began last November under a contract signed at the time. As the scope of the construction expanded, the contract value increased to 23 billion won, making it subject to disclosure. CK Solution is carrying out the Paju data center construction with Xi C&A through July 2027.
CK Solution's second-quarter revenue this year was 85 billion won, up 45.2% from 58.5 billion won a year earlier. Operating profit reached 600 million won, marking a return to the black after a 9.4 billion-won operating loss in the year-earlier period. The company's confirmed Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and data center projects are scheduled to translate into revenue sequentially in 2027 and 2028, pointing to a sharp increase in earnings. Its order backlog stood at 253.3 billion won at the end of the second quarter.
