该公司将使用GIS(原Guil Engineering)拥有的工厂,该子公司于1月被吸收合并。
Multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC)
GIS, formerly Neontech, is preparing for an increase in multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) production by Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The company plans to establish a dedicated production base for MLCC equipment, adding annual production capacity of 50 billion won.
According to industry sources on Aug. 19, GIS plans to convert a factory in the fourth complex of the Gumi National Industrial Complex into a dedicated MLCC equipment production base by the end of this year. The facility will produce MLCC back-end equipment, primarily MLCC cutters, as well as chip separators and inspection systems. It will be the first time the company has established a production line dedicated solely to MLCC equipment.
GIS is a key supplier to Samsung Electro-Mechanics, providing 70% to 80% of its MLCC cutters. The company entered the market after localizing MLCC cutters that had previously been dominated by Japanese suppliers. It developed an MLCC cutter for Samsung Electro-Mechanics in 2014 and began supplying the equipment in 2016. MLCC equipment is now a core business for GIS, accounting for about half of its equipment sales.
The Gumi facility is expected to have production capacity comparable to the company's existing Anyang headquarters plant. The Anyang plant produces a range of equipment, including dicing saws and saw-and-sorter systems for printed circuit boards (PCBs), as well as MLCC cutters, with annual production capacity of about 50 billion won to 60 billion won. GIS plans to equip the Gumi facility with similar capacity dedicated exclusively to MLCC equipment.
The company will use factories owned by GIS, formerly Guil Engineering, a subsidiary it absorbed in January. The business has one production building each in Gumi's fourth industrial complex and Gumi High-Tech Valley, also known as the fifth industrial complex. The facilities previously produced display and automation equipment.
GIS will initially build the production line in unused space at the fourth-complex factory. If additional capacity is needed, it will consider using vacant space at the fifth-complex facility. Both factories are substantially larger than the company's existing Anyang plant.
The expansion is not expected to require significant capital expenditure. MLCC equipment is built to customer specifications, making space for equipment setup and validation more important than dedicated production machinery. Setup for each machine takes more than a month. The existing Anyang plant is operating at full capacity, making it difficult to secure space to build new equipment until completed machines are shipped. GIS therefore plans to expand capacity primarily by adding production personnel rather than making large investments in new facilities.
Alongside the Gumi production base, GIS plans to establish a branch in the Philippines in October or November. The decision comes as Samsung Electro-Mechanics expands its third plant in Calamba, Philippines. The branch will serve as a local support base for equipment supplied to Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Calamba operations, handling setup, maintenance and after-sales service, technical support and sales. GIS plans to initially establish a branch and may later convert it into a local subsidiary if needed.
GIS posted revenue of 47.9 billion won in the first half. Its equipment business, including MLCC cutters and PCB dicing saws, generated 20.1 billion won, or 42% of total revenue. First-half revenue from MLCC equipment is estimated at more than 10 billion won. The company is expected to receive large equipment orders as Samsung Electro-Mechanics expands MLCC production capacity at its Busan and Philippine operations.
