DB HiTek has begun raising foundry prices as demand for semiconductor contract manufacturing expands. The company raised prices twice this year, in March and September, with increases ranging from about 5% to 30%, it was learned on Sept. 28.

Price increases were particularly pronounced for Chinese customers, at 20% to 30%. China accounted for the largest share of DB HiTek's revenue in the first half of this year, at about 60%. Korea ranked second at about 12%, equal to the combined share of the U.S. and Europe. Unlike Chinese customers, Korean clients saw increases limited to around 10%, while prices were frozen for some.

DB HiTek adjusts foundry prices based on customers' business performance. The company notified Chinese customers of price increases as their revenue and profit margins improved. Requests from Chinese customers to expand production capacity also played a role. "Orders from Chinese customers to DB HiTek are increasing," an industry official said. "Some are effectively handing over blank checks and asking the company to expand production capacity."

The smaller increases for Korean customers are believed to reflect their weaker business performance. Some industry observers also said the decision took into account cooperation with Korea's fabless industry. Rival SK keyfoundry is also understood to have frozen prices for certain Korean customers, similar to DB HiTek.

The company is not giving preferential treatment to any particular country or company. Its subsidiary DB GlobalChip is also raising foundry prices as its performance has improved after securing additional customers. DB GlobalChip received about 59.8 billion won in foundry orders in the first half of this year, equivalent to about 66.7% of last year's 89.6 billion won.

Foundry prices could rise further in the second half. DB HiTek is expected to apply a pricing policy similar to that used in the first half. CEO Cho Ki-Seog recently instructed employees to raise foundry prices, according to people familiar with the matter. The size of the increase has not been determined. Revenue from the price increases is expected to be recognized in the fourth quarter of this year or early next year. DB HiTek notifies customers of price increases three months in advance.

The 200mm wafer foundry market, DB HiTek's main business, is facing a global supply shortage as TSMC and Samsung Electronics shift 200mm processes to 300mm wafers.

DB HiTek remains focused on 200mm processes, but its ability to expand capacity is limited. The company plans to add 6,000 200mm wafers per month at its Sangwoo Fab in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, by next year. DB HiTek's total production capacity is 154,000 wafers per month.

Industrial water shortages are currently a bottleneck to capacity expansion. Water consumption has been increasing in the Chungju Dam basin, which supplies industrial water to the plant. DB HiTek plans to respond by expanding its water recycling facilities at the Sangwoo Fab.
