Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs)
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said on Sept. 1 that it secured a 1.0722 trillion won long-term agreement (LTA) to supply multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for artificial intelligence (AI) servers to a major global company. It is the company's largest-ever MLCC supply contract and is equivalent to 9.5% of its consolidated revenue last year. The entire contracted volume will be supplied for one year from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2027. The customer was not disclosed for confidentiality reasons.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics currently has MLCC LTAs with about 10 global companies. The latest disclosure followed the confirmation of 2027 supply volumes from one of those customers. The customer is different from those involved in previously announced supply contracts. Additional disclosures are expected as supply volumes are finalized with other LTA customers. The company is also discussing additional LTAs with several global companies.
Including the latest deal, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has disclosed LTA-related supply contracts totaling 3.32 trillion won. It announced a silicon capacitor (Si-Cap) supply contract worth about 1.5 trillion won in May, followed by MLCC contracts worth about 454 billion won in June and 300 billion won in July. The Si-Cap contract covers two years starting in 2027, while the other MLCC contracts cover one year in 2027.
MLCCs are key electronic components that regulate current flow in electronic circuits and reduce signal interference. MLCCs for AI servers require high capacitance and reliability because they operate for extended periods under high-temperature and high-voltage conditions. The high technical requirements limit the number of manufacturers capable of producing them.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has more than a 40% share of the AI server MLCC market. The company has gained recognition for its MLCC design technology, product reliability, and production and quality-control capabilities needed to meet demand from major customers.
AI servers use more than 10 times as many MLCCs as conventional servers. Demand is increasing as investment in AI data centers expands. Goldman Sachs forecasts the AI server MLCC market will grow at an average annual rate of about 34%, from $1.4 billion last year to $5.8 billion in 2030.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also expanding production capacity to meet surging demand. It is increasing capacity at its Calamba plant in Laguna, the Philippines, to handle additional MLCC volumes starting in 2027. In Korea, it is expanding its Busan facility as a mother line and research and development (R&D) hub for high-value-added MLCCs. The company plans to invest about 15 trillion won in Busan through 2040.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics operates MLCC production bases in Suwon and Busan in Korea, Tianjin in China and Calamba in the Philippines. Suwon handles production of new products and R&D, while Busan focuses on high-value-added products. Tianjin and Calamba serve as mass-production bases.
"The contract reflects recognition by a global customer of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' technological capabilities and supply stability," a company official said. "We will expand supplies of high-reliability MLCCs for AI servers to establish firm leadership in the AI market."
