3S Korea plans to double production capacity for front opening shipping boxes (FOSBs), carriers used to transport semiconductor wafers, as it responds to a surge in orders following the resumption of business with a major customer. The company has also established a local production base in China by bringing its Chinese manufacturing operation under its control.

3S Korea will expand monthly FOSB production capacity at its Anseong plant in Gyeonggi Province to about 30,000 units from 15,000, according to industry sources on Sept. 27. It is currently seeking customer approval for additional molds, with the process expected to be completed next year.

FOSBs are manufactured using general-purpose injection molding machines fitted with dedicated molds. Each mold requires customer approval before products made with it can be supplied. The Anseong plant is currently operating at 89% of capacity based on customer-approved molds. Excluding time required for production-line maintenance and facility management, the company urgently needs additional capacity. It plans to double capacity by using existing idle injection molding equipment.

3S Korea has also secured a production base in China. In July, the company increased its stake in 3S Semiconductor Materials (Suzhou) from 31.5% to 51%, making it a subsidiary. 3S Semiconductor Technology (Zhangjiagang), which is wholly owned by the Suzhou unit, has equipment capable of producing 100,000 FOSBs a month. The Zhangjiagang plant will gradually bring production equipment online after receiving customer approval for its molds, with mass production scheduled to begin between late 2027 and early 2028.

The Suzhou unit was established in October 2020 as a local Chinese sales company with investment from 3S Korea and China’s Suzhou Zaixian Trading. 3S Korea initially held a 20% stake and invested an additional 4.6 billion won in 2023 to raise its stake to 35.17% as it sought to expand its wafer carrier business in China. At the time, Suzhou Zaixian Trading was the largest shareholder with a 60% stake.

However, delays in customer approval of molds pursued by the former management and Suzhou Zaixian Trading prevented full-scale mass production from beginning. 3S Korea is understood to have sought management control of the Suzhou unit to bring the Zhangjiagang plant into normal operation.

Combined FOSB production equipment at the Anseong and Zhangjiagang plants has monthly capacity of 130,000 units. The Anseong plant will expand supplies to major Korean wafer producers and semiconductor manufacturers, while the Zhangjiagang plant will serve customers in China as well as overseas markets including Europe and the US, excluding Korea.

FOSB shipments have increased rapidly since the company resumed deliveries to a major Korean customer in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, from April through June 2026. The resumption came about two years after major customers left because of customer-service and quality issues. New orders have also increased as expanding artificial intelligence (AI) investment drives higher semiconductor wafer shipments. Wafer carrier revenue reached 5.18 billion won in the fiscal first quarter, up 165% from the previous quarter.

Efforts to normalize operations following a management change are beginning to show results. The company moved early to shut down its factory automation (FA) business, which had accumulated losses of about 11.5 billion won during fiscal 2024 and 2025. It consolidated sales and procurement functions previously divided between its semiconductor and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) divisions into company-wide organizations, reducing fixed costs and improving operating efficiency. It also resumed technical exchanges with major customers and established a system for incorporating customer requirements into internal operations. Its semiconductor research and development organization was expanded and reorganized into hardware and materials development groups.

Korea Wafer Holdings became 3S Korea’s largest shareholder after acquiring a 12% stake in March last year. It raised concerns about the former management’s operations, including investment in the Chinese subsidiary and the potential for technology leakage, and called for changes to the board. It secured management control after its nominees were appointed as new directors at the annual shareholders’ meeting in June of the same year.

3S Korea is the only Korean company producing both FOSBs and front opening unified pods (FOUPs) for 300-millimeter semiconductor wafers. FOSBs are containers used by wafer manufacturers to transport finished wafers to semiconductor manufacturers. FOUPs are used to transport and store wafers between process equipment inside semiconductor fabs. Both are critical equipment for preventing wafers from being exposed to external contaminants.

3S Korea posted revenue of 5.575 billion won and operating profit of 5.6 million won in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, covering April through June. It was the company’s first quarterly operating profit in two years, since the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023, from January through March 2024. Semiconductor business revenue this year is expected to surpass the record 17.088 billion won posted in fiscal 2023.
