Qualcomm's Snapdragon brand, which began as a smartphone mobile application processor (AP) platform, is expanding into a multi-device artificial intelligence (AI) platform spanning PCs, wearables, vehicles and extended-reality (XR) devices.
According to Qualcomm's own survey released on the 4th, 61% of South Korean consumers view Snapdragon as a key factor in improving the premium Android experience. As the on-device AI era gains momentum, demand is growing not only for raw processing power but also for intelligent, integrated experiences that recognize user context and connect multiple devices seamlessly.
Qualcomm highlighted this ecosystem-expansion strategy at Galaxy Unpacked 2026, held on July 22. Samsung's new Galaxy lineup featured the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy for smartphones, Snapdragon Wear Elite for wearables, and the first-generation Snapdragon AR1 platform for smart glasses.
More than 3.5 billion Snapdragon-powered devices are now in use worldwide. Qualcomm has continued to pursue a platform strategy that optimizes central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), neural processing units (NPUs) and connectivity hardware at the system level, aiming to deliver consistent AI performance and connectivity across a range of form factors.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, Qualcomm's flagship chipset, is built around the Qualcomm Oryon CPU and supports power-efficient operation and sophisticated on-device AI processing. It incorporates intelligent camera capabilities, optimized gaming graphics, and AI-driven 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity. Qualcomm also says the platform combines its Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU to enable more personalized on-device AI features for Galaxy devices.
The platform supports video playback at up to 8K resolution and 60 frames per second, as well as AV1 and H.265 codecs, helping optimize power consumption during high-resolution media playback.
Expansion into wearables and XR devices is also becoming more visible. In the past, smartwatches and augmented-reality glasses primarily acted as companion devices, collecting data such as heart rate, sleep patterns and step counts before sending it to a smartphone for processing. AI functions also often relied on cloud servers, creating limitations including response delays, constant connectivity requirements and privacy concerns.
Advances in on-device AI are rapidly addressing those shortcomings. Devices equipped with Hexagon NPU-based AI processing can now handle complex workloads in real time. The Snapdragon Wear Elite platform used in the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 monitors users' biometric signals and surrounding environments through advanced multi-sensor fusion technology.
The first-generation Snapdragon AR1 platform, designed for intelligent eyewear, emphasizes an ultra-lightweight and low-power design. Its package footprint has been reduced to fit within eyeglass frames. Rather than handling computationally intensive 3D graphics, it is optimized for camera-based visual recognition, real-time translation, head-up display (HUD) data presentation and on-device AI voice interaction—maximizing power efficiency in an extremely lightweight form factor.
“The battleground in the premium mobile market is shifting from a contest over individual-device specifications to the completeness of an on-device AI ecosystem that brings smartphones, smartwatches, smart glasses and PCs together,” an industry source said.
