Qualcomm's next-generation mobile image signal processor (ISP) delivers what the company says is its widest dynamic range (DR) yet.

Judd Heape, Qualcomm executive vice president of product management and multimedia, said at Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui on Sept. 24 local time that the key feature is the ISP's 20-bit high dynamic range (HDR), which provides the widest range among mobile ISPs worldwide.

The next-generation Qualcomm Spectra ISP will be integrated into the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series system-on-chip (SoC). The ISP receives signals from cameras and image sensors within the SoC and processes them into photos and video.

A higher HDR bit depth allows brightness and contrast information to be represented with greater precision. However, 20-bit HDR was already supported by the previous-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The latest generation achieves higher-level HDR performance through an upgraded second-generation 20-bit HDR processing pipeline.

"When a user presses the camera shutter, Bare RAW data from the image sensor enters the Spectra ISP," Heape said. "The ISP removes noise from that raw signal and processes image exposure, white balance and autofocus." The image and video processing pipeline then continues through HDR, 3D look-up table (LUT) color adjustment, conversion to luminance and chrominance information (YUV), and storage in memory.

Unlike the previous generation, the next-generation Spectra removes noise as soon as the raw data signal enters the front end of the ISP, enabling cleaner and sharper images. The process is implemented through a machine-learning Motion Intelligence engine. Previously, noise was removed later in the pipeline after it had already been amplified.

The ISP's color-adjustment engine has also been upgraded. The new Elite Color Engine uses real-time 3D LUT processing, allowing red, green and blue (RGB) colors to be precisely adjusted in localized areas. For example, the color of a blue sky can be changed without affecting a person's skin tone. Previous ISPs used 2D RGB color-matrix calculations to adjust saturation and color, preventing such localized adjustments.

"The next-generation Spectra can use three 64-megapixel sensors simultaneously to capture still images with zero shutter lag," Heape said. "This is an entirely new capability added this year." Shutter lag refers to the delay between when a user presses the camera shutter and when the image is actually captured. Increased hardware pixel-processing capacity enables zero-shutter-lag shooting at ultra-high resolutions.
