Simmtech signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with North Chungcheong Province and Cheongju City on Sept. 2 to expand its production base for semiconductor printed circuit boards (PCBs). The company will invest a total of 400 billion won in phases to expand production capacity for next-generation substrates used in artificial intelligence (AI) servers.

The new production facilities will be built on a 16,529-square-meter site in Oksan-myeon, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, as well as in unused space at its existing Cheongju plant. New buildings, including production and office facilities, with a combined floor area of 11,349 square meters will be constructed on the new site.

Simmtech will build a dedicated plant for small outline compression attached memory module (SOCAMM) substrates, a next-generation memory module for AI servers. SOCAMM is a memory module for the Vera central processing unit (CPU) used in Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin AI accelerator platform. It contains four LPDDR5X packages.

The company will also expand production capacity for multichip package (MCP) substrates used for low-power DRAM (LPDDR5X) installed in SOCAMM. It will increase capacity for high-layer-count modified semi-additive process (mSAP) substrates and semiconductor substrates for system integrated circuits (ICs). mSAP is a PCB manufacturing process that forms a thin copper layer on an insulating layer and then creates circuits through plating. It enables finer wiring than conventional circuit-forming methods and is used for high-density, multilayer substrates.

Simmtech's board approved 274.2 billion won in new facility investment on Aug. 25, with the investment scheduled through December 2027. The company will invest 145.9 billion won to expand SOCAMM module PCB production capacity, 105.1 billion won in high-layer-count mSAP substrates and 23.2 billion won in semiconductor substrates for system ICs.

Once the first phase is completed, annual SOCAMM module production capacity, measured by revenue, will increase to 500 billion won from 300 billion won. The company will also add about 250 billion won in annual production capacity for semiconductor package substrates, including MCP substrates. Combined, annual production capacity for SOCAMM module PCBs and semiconductor package substrates will increase by about 450 billion won. The new production lines are scheduled to begin operations sequentially from 2028. Simmtech will also hire 100 new employees.

"It is significant that we are moving forward with the expansion of a plant on the new site based on close cooperation with North Chungcheong Province and Cheongju City," Simmtech CEO Kim Young-koo said. "Through this large-scale investment, we will secure technological superiority and strengthen our market position, while also taking the lead in hiring local talent as a company rooted in North Chungcheong Province."
