Snap, the operator of social media service Snapchat, launched its Specs augmented reality (AR) glasses on Sept. 16 for about 3 million won. Snap had previously formed partnerships with Nvidia, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Salesforce for the product.

Snap's launch of Specs is aimed at entering another form of enterprise computing equipment market.

Specs was unveiled in June. At the time, Snap described Specs as a new kind of computer, highlighting artificial intelligence (AI) assistance, work tools, entertainment and collaboration. The price presents a barrier for ordinary consumers. For businesses, however, the glasses can be considered an equipment investment aimed at improving the productivity of field workers.

Snap aims to position Specs as a computer for workplace use, targeting stores and service locations as well as factories and manufacturing facilities. Specs incorporates computing hardware into the glasses themselves as a standalone AR device, eliminating the need for an external battery pack, separate computing puck or cable connection. Workers can view information directly in front of them and perform tasks using voice and hand gestures without taking out a smartphone or laptop.

According to Snap, Salesforce's Agentforce platform for building autonomous AI agents can be used on Specs to identify problems, retrieve relevant information and perform tasks. Snap also plans to connect Specs with AWS's Amazon Quick, an agentic AI assistant platform for work, allowing workers to use voice commands to retrieve information such as inventory levels and product locations.

Nvidia is supporting technology that enables agents built on the Nvidia XR AI Stack to understand a worker's surroundings and corporate data and provide real-time guidance.

Snap is also working with engineering company Trifork and industrial AR/VR software company Hololight. Trifork connects field technicians with remote experts and AI agents, while Hololight provides a work environment where documents and 3D models can be used in AR space.

Snap Chief Executive Evan Spiegel said the bulky and large designs of existing AR devices have been a major barrier to their adoption.

Specs weighs 132 to 136 grams and operates independently without a puck or cables. Snap says this could make it easier for field engineers to use AR glasses to inspect equipment while viewing digital instructions or communicate with other workers and remote experts.

Snap also introduced Specs Intelligence, an AI assistant for the iPhone and Mac. Pricing has yet to be finalized, with Spiegel saying the company plans to offer usage-based plans ranging from free options to various paid tiers.

Snap has steadily developed AR glasses technology since introducing Spectacles, camera-equipped smart glasses, in 2016. It subsequently unveiled display-equipped Spectacles capable of overlaying AR content onto physical spaces in 2021 and standalone AR glasses with its proprietary Snap OS in 2024. The company has also developed its own optical engine and spatial perception technologies as it has expanded its AR glasses capabilities.
