SK hynix will begin mass production at its advanced packaging plant in Indiana in 2029.

SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the company's semiconductor plant in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Aug. 27 that the U.S. is at the center of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and that SK hynix entered the dynamic ecosystem with its American depositary receipt (ADR) listing last month. He said the large-scale investment marks the beginning of a new journey to shape the future of AI in Indiana.

The Indiana plant will be the first advanced semiconductor packaging complex of its kind in the U.S. It will serve as SK hynix's U.S. packaging base for high-bandwidth memory (HBM). HBM wafers produced at the company's semiconductor front-end fabs in Korea will be shipped to the site for advanced packaging and reliability testing. Finished products will then be supplied to U.S. Big Tech customers.

A local research and development (R&D) center will also be integrated with the manufacturing facility. Customers, universities and suppliers will collaborate from prototype design through final validation, helping shorten development cycles.

SK hynix will invest more than $4 billion in the Indiana facility. It will be the largest private development project in Indiana's history.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has also finalized $458 million in federal grants for the Indiana project under the CHIPS Act program.

Foundation work is currently underway at the site, with construction of major facilities scheduled to begin in October. SK hynix aims to complete the cleanroom by October 2028, followed by mass production of seventh-generation HBM, or HBM4E, in the third quarter of 2029. Annual production capacity is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of units.

"By 2030, the Indiana plant will become a key HBM production base in the U.S.," Kwak said.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, SK hynix also signed a partnership framework memorandum of understanding (MOU) with nearby Purdue University. The partnership is aimed at joint research on next-generation semiconductors and the development of global talent.
