General Motors to sell Indiana battery venture to Samsung SDI

Samsung SDI is poised to buy the 680-acre property, take over the JV and own the Indiana battery-making facility, Bloomberg reports. GM’s move comes as it scales down its EV ambitions amid lukewarm demand for electric vehicles in America.

General Motors is set to sell its half of a planned USD 3.5 billion EV battery joint venture in Indiana to partner Samsung SDI, according to Bloomberg.

Samsung SDI is poised to buy the 680-acre property, take over the JV and own the New Carlisle, Indiana battery-making facility, the Bloomberg report said.

GM’s move comes as it scales down its EV ambitions amid lukewarm demand for electric vehicles in America.

In March, GM and LG Energy Solution announced they would transform an EV battery plant in Tennessee to make batteries for BESS.

The Indiana plant was announced two years ago as an investment between GM and Samsung SDI. The aim was to eventually employ 1,600 people and start mass production in 2027.

Since September 2025, when the federal USD 7,500 tax credit for US-made EVs ended, fewer Americans have chosen to buy a new battery-powered car, according to Business Insider. In the first quarter of 2026, deliveries dropped 27%, according to Cox Automotive data. That follows a 46% fall in EV sales in the final quarter of 2025.

Honda has said that it will discontinue the Honda Prologue, its only battery electric vehicle currently sold in the United States. Hyundai confirmed to Business Insider that it will stop selling the Korean-built, standard Ioniq 6 in the US.
