Sunic System

Sunic System

THE ELEC visited Sunic System's expanded production base in Brain City, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, earlier this month. Past a newly built office building bearing the company logo, the entrance to the Plant A production facility led through an air shower lined with circular nozzles along the walls and ceiling and into an empty cleanroom. Plant A, which recently received approval for use, is scheduled to begin operations at the end of October.

The scene next door at Plant B was different. Its steel frame remained exposed, with large air-conditioning ducts running through the interior. Exterior-wall installation was underway, with aerial work platforms and construction materials surrounding the building. Plant B is also scheduled for completion at the end of October.

Sunic System is expanding its production facilities to accommodate larger equipment and a surge in orders. The company is preparing for equipment orders related to Gen 8.6 organic light-emitting diode (OLED), OLED-on-silicon (OLEDoS) and new perovskite businesses.

The Brain City production base covers a site area of 22,628 square meters, with a planned total floor area of 15,756 square meters. Construction of the Plant A production facility and office building has been completed. Once Plant B is finished, Sunic System will have production infrastructure about four times the scale of its Suwon headquarters. The need for additional capacity is evident in its order backlog, which stood at 642 billion won at the end of June, up about 60 billion won from 582.3 billion won at the end of March. The backlog also exceeds last year's annual revenue of 515.8 billion won.

The company's performance grew sharply last year. Revenue increased more than fourfold to 515.8 billion won from 112.9 billion won in 2024, while operating profit rose to 111.5 billion won from 7.9 billion won. The increase reflected revenue recognition from deliveries of large OLED equipment.

Sunic System posted first-half revenue of 36.3 billion won and an operating loss of 8.7 billion won this year. Shipments of major equipment, however, are concentrated in the second half. Deposition equipment is recognized as revenue only after customer-specific design, manufacturing, shipment, installation and inspection following an order, creating a time lag between orders and revenue recognition.

Existing production facilities alone would constrain Sunic System's ability to manufacture its backlog of more than 640 billion won while taking additional orders. Plants A and B at Brain City are intended to address that growth. Increasing equipment size is another factor. Sunic System has expanded from small OLED deposition equipment for research and development (R&D) to mass-production equipment using the fine metal mask (FMM) method for BOE's Gen 8.6 OLED lines. Larger substrates require bigger vacuum chambers and transfer systems, as well as more space for equipment assembly and test runs.

The new production facilities will also be used for OLEDoS equipment. OLEDoS is a microdisplay technology that forms OLEDs on silicon wafers. Its ability to deliver compact, high-resolution displays makes it suitable for extended reality (XR) devices and smart glasses.

Sunic System has supplied related deposition equipment since 2017. It secured equipment orders from three customers in the first half and is seeking to add four more in the second half, bringing the total to seven customers this year.

In January, Sunic System signed a 41 billion won contract with China's Goerpixel Technology to supply micro-OLED deposition equipment, followed by a 20.6 billion won contract with Anhui Hongxi Weixian Technology in February. If investment plans by all seven customers translate into actual orders, Sunic System's OLEDoS equipment orders this year are estimated at around 200 billion won.

Investment in OLEDoS equipment is also increasing. The industry is shifting from single-emission-layer structures to tandem architectures that stack two emission layers, increasing the number of deposition processes and equipment configurations. Sunic System estimates that tandem equipment costs about 1.5 times as much as equipment for single-stack structures.

TrendForce forecasts demand for OLEDoS microdisplays used in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) devices will rise from 1.6 million units in 2025 to 31.5 million units in 2030. Panel makers typically invest in production lines ahead of demand for finished products, meaning equipment orders occur earlier.

Sunic System is also applying the vacuum deposition technology it developed for displays to the perovskite sector. It has developed dry deposition equipment for electron transport layers (ETL) in perovskite solar cells that supports Gen 8 substrates and has secured a track record of equipment deliveries to global solar companies.

Perovskite is attracting attention as a material for tandem solar cells that combine it with silicon solar cells to improve power-generation efficiency. Large-scale mass-production investment has yet to begin in earnest, but major solar companies are conducting pilot production and preparing for commercialization.

Sunic System is also developing deposition equipment for next-generation displays that use perovskite as a light-emitting material. The company is extending the vacuum and thin-film deposition technologies developed through its OLED equipment business into OLEDoS, solar cells and next-generation displays.

The Brain City production base will operate alongside Sunic System's Suwon headquarters, with the two sites dividing roles. Production space will be allocated according to equipment type and project schedules, with the new facilities used for assembling large equipment and carrying out customer-specific projects.

Construction of the new production base will be completed after Plant A begins operations and Plant B is finished in October. Sunic System plans to use the expanded production space to broaden the application of its deposition equipment from its existing OLED business to OLEDoS and perovskite.

"We expanded our Brain City production infrastructure to lead changes in the next-generation OLEDoS display market amid growing global OLED investment and to prepare for an expected surge in medium- to long-term equipment demand," a Sunic System official said.
