Korea Zinc said on Sept. 2 it has completed an expansion of its semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid production lines at its Onsan Refinery in Ulsan and started operations. Annual production capacity increased to 320,000 tons from 280,000 tons.

The company added 40,000 tons of annual capacity through its No. 20 and No. 21 semiconductor sulfuric acid production lines. The expansion is aimed at meeting demand from new fabs being brought online by South Korean semiconductor manufacturers amid increased investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Korea Zinc previously produced 240,000 tons a year from 17 production lines before adding the No. 18 and No. 19 lines in 2024, raising capacity to 280,000 tons.

Semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid is used in cleaning processes to remove organic matter and microscopic contaminants from wafer surfaces during semiconductor manufacturing. As semiconductor circuits become more advanced, sulfuric acid purity and quality have a greater impact on yields and reliability. The product must undergo customer approval and process validation.

Korea Zinc supplies about 60% of South Korea's demand for semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid. About 95% of its production is supplied to major domestic semiconductor manufacturers, with the remainder delivered to overseas chipmakers in countries including Japan and Singapore.

At its Onsan Refinery, Korea Zinc recovers and purifies sulfur dioxide (SO₂) generated during zinc and lead smelting to produce semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid with a purity of at least 99.9999%, known as "six nines," or 6N. Rather than procuring sulfur externally, the company uses sulfur dioxide generated during the smelting process as a raw material, making it relatively less exposed to fluctuations in sulfur prices and supply chains.

Korea Zinc plans to gradually expand annual semiconductor sulfuric acid production capacity in South Korea to as much as 500,000 tons in line with expansion schedules of domestic semiconductor manufacturers. It is also considering building a semiconductor sulfuric acid production line with annual capacity of about 100,000 tons at its planned integrated smelter in Tennessee, which is targeting trial operations in 2029 and commercial production in 2030.

"We will respond in a timely manner to the start-up of new production facilities and capacity expansion by major domestic customers and contribute to stabilizing South Korea's semiconductor materials supply chain," a Korea Zinc official said. "We will gradually expand domestic production capacity in line with customer demand and investment schedules and establish a supply base in global markets, including the US."
