Taiwanese prosecutors have charged nine people for illegally exporting high-end AI servers to mainland China. Those charged include one person from Nvidia and two people from Super Micro, according to a report by Associated Press.
AI infrastructure such as semiconductors made in Taiwan has become a source of friction between the US and China. US has imposed successive curbs on Nvidia’s exports of advanced chips to China.
Prosecutors said the servers were ‘B300’ GPUs, which have been banned from sale to China.
“We will work with the Taiwan authorities to help them resolve the allegations as quickly as possible,” Nvidia spokesperson Patrick Rutherford said.
Meanwhile, China's chip industry has increased efforts to develop domestic alternatives after a series of US restrictions limited access to advanced semiconductor-design software and manufacturing equipment.
According to a report by Financial Times, Chinese policymakers have also considered broader measures to prevent strategically important domestic technologies from being transferred overseas or acquired by foreign companies.
